Congregational Announcements

Pledge Cards: The Finance Task Force has placed a secured mailbox in the foyer to receive your pledge cards. We also remind everyone that donations to the Facility Fund are best placed in the offering with a memo note indicating “Facility Fund”.

Commitment forms were emailed to you or placed in your church mailbox. Please prayerfully consider how you would like to serve Tabor in this coming year. Forms are due by October 11.

Toys! The nursery toys were sorted and toys which are no longer needed were removed. If you would like any of the toys, you are welcome to take them from the tub in the fellowship hall. Any toys which are left will be donated to the St. Francis Foster Care program.

Playing at the Patch: Plan to join us for a fun afternoon at Papa’s Pumpkin Patch next Sunday, October 18. Meet at the church park at 3:30 p.m. if you would like to ride the hayrack or head directly to the Patch and meet there at 4:00 p.m. Please bring money for paid activities as well as for supper.

Tabor Mennonite Women: Tuesday, October 20th we will meet at the MCC Center in North Newton for a work day from 9:30 am to 3:00 pm. Please bring a sack lunch, and also something for our break time. If you are willing to provide devotions, please contact Elaine Unruh.

What’s Cookin’? Soup! Come to the Tabor Church fellowship hall on October 29, 6:30 p.m. to cook and taste a variety of soups. What’s Cookin’? is offered by the Tabor Church Food Pantry and is open to anyone in the community who is interested in coming for menu ideas, cooking fun, and fellowship. Western District Conference Annual Assembly will be held on the Bethel College campus on October 30-31. Information about the assembly is posted on the bulletin board. If you would like to serve as a Tabor Church delegate, please contact Pastor Phil or the church office.

Meat Canning this year will be on November 9 and 10. Sign up on the bulletin board to volunteer. If you wish to make a monetary contribution, checks can be made out to Tabor Mennonite Church, earmarked “MCC meat canning”, and placed in the truck in the foyer. Community Announcements

The Hesston College Bel Canto Singers will have their only concert of the fall semester in collaboration with the Goessel High School Elbiata Singers at 6 p.m., Sunday, October 25 at the historic Basilica of St. Fidelis Church: The Cathedral on the Plains, in Victoria, Ks. Bus transportation leaving from Hesston is available for $50 per person. Reserve your spot by October 14 by calling 620-327-8109.

Red Cross Blood Mobile: At the October 20 blood drive we will be serving pies to celebrate reaching our goal in August. The individuals who take time out of their busy schedules to donate their blood or their time are very much appreciated!! Red Cross is trying something new this drive. It is an Express Drive with only 2 beds and 1 nurse, so call soon to reserve the time you want.

Bethesda Home Pillars Banquet: Mark your calendars for November 8th, and plan to attend this year’s Bethesda Home Pillars Banquet. The event will be held at the Dyck Arboretum and catered by Keith’s Foods. Help support Bethesda, and enjoy fellowship and entertainment. More information to come.

The 3rd Annual Goessel Community Thanksgiving Meal will be on Sunday, November 15, 5:00-6:30 p.m. at the Goessel Elementary School Gymnasium. Everyone in the community is invited. The Alexanderwohl, Goessel and Tabor churches provide food and volunteers to make this event possible. Signup sheets for salads, bread or desserts, turkey or ham are up in the lobby today. Monetary donations are also welcome to be used toward the expenses for the meal, such as paper goods and other food items like potatoes, vegetables, and meat. You may write your check out to “Goessel Ministerial Alliance” and give it to your church office. The meal planning team is Keith and Barb Banman, Linda Peters, Janice Funk Voth, Becky Wedel and Lynette Duerksen. The annual Instituto Bíblico Anabautista-IBA BENEFIT dinner will take place Friday, October 16 at 6:30 pm in the First Mennonite Church of Newton fellowship hall. A smothered pork burrito dinner will be prepared and served by Chef Carlos Lujano. A short program will follow featuring a hymn by IBA student Javier Rodriquez, a dance performed by the children of Iglesia Mennonita Casa Betania, and video presentation by Ervin Stutzman. Dinner is by donation. This is a great opportunity for a Sunday School, Small Group or individuals to come and hear how this program is equipping Hispanic leaders in Mennonite Church USA. The Creation for the annual Thanksgiving celebration on Thursday, Nov. 26, at 7:30 p.m. Community members are invited to join the college choirs, under the direction of Russell Adrian, by singing in the chorus. Dyck Arboretum of the Plains: The first concert of the 2015-16 Prairie Window Concert Series, featuring Nashville fiddling duo 10 String Symphony,

Hoffnungsau Mennonite Church: 43 13th Ave., rural Inman, scheduled its annual Mission Supper from 5 to 7pm on Saturday, Oct. 17. The proceeds to benefit Saint Francis Community Services – Hutchinson Adoption Unit to provide Christmas gifts for special needs children waiting for adoptive families.For a free will donation, diners served include baked sausage, mashed potatoes, creamed peas, applesauce, rolls and homemade pie.

Congregational Announcements

Thanks: 52 walkers, runners, strollers and one biker gathered on September 27 at Goessel Mennonite Church to walk two or six miles for the Goessel Area Harvest Giving Walk. All joined together to raise money and awareness of MCC projects and Tabor Food Pantry needs. The total amount raised was over $5,000 which will be distributed to MCC and to the Tabor Food Pantry. Official results will be posted in the Church Annual Reports later in the year. As has been the tradition, it continues to be so awesome to see the Goessel community supporting overseas and local missions. Thanks to all of you who walked, and who donated money.

MCC Borderlands Learning Tour 2015 – you are invited to participate in a learning tour designed to bring awareness about the increasing migrant deaths, militarization and effects on sister communities by the border wall along the Mexico/U.S. Borderlands. Regina Calcaterra, author of Etched in Sand will discuss her book and advocacy work with foster care at 7:30 p.m. Monday, Oct. 5 in the Hesston Mennonite Church sanctuary, 309 S. Main. The book, which was chosen as the college’s 2015 First-year Experience (FYE) common read, traces her and her four siblings’ childhood experiences with abandonment, physical abuse and a fear of the foster system that was put in place to protect them.

A follow-up question and answer session will be held 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 6 at the Hesston Public Library. Both events are free and open to the public. Copies of the book are available at the Hesston and Newton Public libraries for any who wish to read her account prior to the presentations.

Make sense of your Medicare and Social Security choices” at 11 a.m., 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. on four upcoming Mondays – Oct. 5, Nov. 2 and Dec. 7. Harvest Giving Walk: TODAY IS THE HARVEST GIVING WALK! You can still sign up to walk or run and you can still get your checkbook out to give a donation payable to the Harvest Giving Walk. Find your walkers in the church foyer today for your generous giving to help MCC respond to many poverty needs, as well as the expenses of our local Tabor Food Pantry.

Walkers are invited to bring an item for the food pantry. Please be at the Goessel Mennonite Church by 1:15 p.m. to sign in. Shingle tear-off at the Museum, October 3: The Mennonite Heritage and Agricultural Museum board is looking for volunteers to help tear off shingles and tin from the Bank Building roof. Depending on the weather, we plan to do this next Saturday, October 3, at 9am (the following week, Marlin Janzen will be roofing the building). Fall Workday: This is a reminder for the workday on Sept. 26th, starting at 8:00 am. We will be doing some tree trimming and some work around the playground equipment. If you could bring shovels, rakes, gloves or a pole saw, that would be helpful. Heavy equipment will be provided. If you would be willing to provide snacks for a break, thank you.
The merry-go-round is going to be removed from the park this fall due to insurance concerns. If you, as a church member, are interested in owning this piece of equipment for a donation, please talk to a trustee. If multiple people are interested, we will sell it by means of an auction.

Sexton Position: Please be in prayerful consideration for the position of church Sexton and for a trustee as you consider your involvement here at Tabor Church this year. If you are interested in either position, please talk to a trustee for more information.

Support for Michael Unruh: The Deacons are providing a way to contribute to Michael Unruh’s education expenses at Anabaptist Mennonite Biblical Seminary. Harvest Giving Walk: The Goessel Area Harvest Giving Walk will take place September 27, 1:30 p.m., leaving from Goessel Mennonite Church.

There is still time to sign up as a walker/runner with your church recruiter who is anxiously waiting to hear from you. We are trying to exceed our total from last year which will make a difference for projects through MCC like Global Families and Farmer Friday. Where is the Good News for Rural Folk? AMBS-Kansas Center will be hosting S. Roy Kaufman’s webinar entitled “Where is the Good News for Rural Folk?” This webinar will take place on Wednesday, September 30 from 1:00 – 2:30pm at the AMBS-Kansas Center classroom at 2517 N Main in N Newton. This webinar will explore how a ministry of community formation might take place in the lives of declining rural congregations, enabling these congregations to become missional agents of change in their communities.

Annual Instituto Bíblico Anabautista-IBA benefit dinner, Fri., Oct. 16 at 6:30 pm, First Mennonite Church of Newton fellowship hall. A smothered pork burrito dinner will be prepared and served by Chef Carlos Lujano. A short program will follow featuring a hymn by IBA student Javier Rodriquez, a dance performed by the children of Iglesia Mennonita Casa Betania, and video presentation by Ervin Stutzman. Mennonite Disaster Service and Rocky Mountain Mennonite Camp are collaborating in a disaster mitigation project to stop the spread of the spruce beetle to other trees on the camp property. Volunteers are urgently needed at RMMC in Divide, Colorado – any time from Oct. 2 through Oct. 10. Help fell, limb and remove logs, chip branches, debark trees that cannot be removed, split and stack firewood. All skill levels welcome! Accommodations, meals and tools provided. Kauffman Museum. Ben Chappell, a professor of American studies at the University of Kansas, will speak on softball as a cultural resource, using the example of Mexican-American fast-pitch softball and Newton’s annual

summer tournament, the oldest in the country. Mon., Sept. 21, Chappell will speak in Bethel’s convocation,11 a.m., and moderate a panel of Newton community members talking about the fast-pitch tournament, 7 p.m., both in Krehbiel Auditorium in Luyken Fine Arts Center. Regina Calcaterra, author of Etched in Sand will discuss her book and advocacy work with foster care at 7:30 p.m. Monday, Oct. 5 in the Hesston Mennonite Church sanctuary, 309 S. Main. The book, which was chosen as the college’s 2015 First-year Experience (FYE) common read, traces her and her four siblings’ childhood experiences with abandonment, physical abuse and a fear of the foster system that was put in place to protect them.

A follow-up question and answer session will be held 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 6 at the Hesston Public Library. Both events are free and open to the public. Copies of the book are available at the Hesston and Newton Public libraries for any who wish to read her account prior to the presentations.
