Congregational Announcements
Ash Wednesday, the first day of the season of Lent, is this week. Come join us for supper, followed by a brief Ash Wednesday service before regular activities.
The Finance Task Force has noted that there have been many volunteers working on the building project. Our thanks go out to all. Some of the greatest moments of the project come from working together for goals bigger than ourselves. We have had some questions about the value of the donated work. In communication with the building committee, we have estimated that the value of the work to date is over $35,000. In addition to this amount, contractors within the church have donated their services and their hours are represented as a dollar amount toward their pledge fulfillment.
There are still many variables in costs to calculate as various aspects of the project are completed and billed. When the project is completed, hopefully by the end of April, we will be able to specifically calculate the total cost and the giving needed to finish paying for the project. We are thankful for all of the gifts to this project and hope that everyone is still relying on God’s inspiration for guidance.
The youth are close to reaching our monetary goal for Convention this summer. If you’d like to continue to support the youth, we will be selling bags of fairly traded One Village Coffee (comes in dark roast, medium roast, and decaf as well as whole and ground bean varieties). These are $15 a bag (with 40% of profits going to our youth group, and $1 for every bag sold goes toward peace and justice work). If you are interested, please be in touch with a youth or sponsor. Act Reading Challenge Grand Prize: If you have read through Acts multiple times over these past months, please let Pastor Phil know. The person who read through Acts the most times will receive the Grand Prize!
Sabbatical: The deacon board has approved a sabbatical for Pastor Katherine in August, September, and October of this year. She plans to use this time to journey through a reading list of books on justice issues, food justice, preaching, and the Bible. She will explore a number of creative avenues to experience and experiment with her learnings from the books, such as through prayer walks, journaling, and encountering God through meals.
Mennonite Church USA Convention: It’s time to register for the MC USA convention in Kansas City this summer. If you would like to be a delegate from Tabor, please let pastor Phil know by March 1.
Building Dedication: Considering another date. We are tentatively planning to have a Building Dedication Service on Sunday, August 25, 2019. We hope that everyone can attend this celebration! Please check your calendars and let church staff know if there are major conflicts with this date.
A membership meal is being planned for Sunday, April 7, from 12-3 pm. Please let a pastor know by the end of March if you are interested in joining Tabor as a member.
Camp Mennoscah is accepting registrations for summer camps. Register at campmennoscah.org. Receive an early registration discount until May 1 when full camp fees are paid! Tabor Christian Ed Co will again be offering $50 scholarships to Camp Mennoscah and Rocky Mountain Mennonite Camp campers. Sign up on the bulletin board indicating the week of camp your child will attend.
Food Commodities: Due to the inclement weather over the last 2 weeks commodities were cancelled for February. We will not be receiving commodities until April. The Second Monday Family History & Genealogy Group will meet on Monday, March 11, 7:00 p.m., in the Goessel City Building. Bob Schroeder of Manhattan will share about his father John Schroeder, an orphaned child: “Five Orphans Come by Train from Pennsylvania to Newton, Kansas, in 1919.” The meeting is free and open to the public.
Museum Heritage Dinner: The featured speaker this year will be Melissa Scheffler, KWCH 12 News Anchor. Melissa, a Newton native, will take us “behind the scenes” of the TV news business with stories and videos. Ticket price: $50 per person. The Dinner will be Friday, March 15, 6:30 p.m. at the Alexanderwohl Mennonite Church. This is a fundraiser for the Mennonite Heritage & Agricultural Museum.
Attention Young Adults! There will be an Area Wide PC-PF (Post College- Pre Family) get together on Saturday, March 16. We will meet at 7:00 PM at The Pighouse (Howard Farm). Please bring a snack to share, games, and friends! This group is designed for young adults in similar life stages to socialize together. Newton Et Cetera Shop invites organizations to apply for their annual Local Giving grants. Local Giving grants are made available each spring by the Newton Et Cetera Shop board of directors. Applications may be downloaded at newtonetceterashop.com and must be submitted by e-mail to localgiving@
newtonetceterashop.com by April 12, 2019. Multiple grants will be awarded to selected groups by June 2019 in amounts up to $5,000. Applicants for the Local Giving grants must hold legal nonprofit status and operate out of and serve Newton, North Newton, Hesston, Goessel, Moundridge, Whitewater, Elbing, Halstead or Walton. Applicants do not need to have a religious affiliation or mission, but they must function in a manner consistent with the mission of Mennonite Central Committee.
Bethel College: Sunday, March 10 – Bethel College Wind Ensemble and Philharmonia Orchestra joint concert, 3 p.m., Memorial Hall.
Hesston College: With an innovative approach to the classical-style of Mozart, the Berlin-based string ensemble, Armida Quartet, will take the Hesston-Bethel Performing Arts stage at 7:30 p.m., Tuesday, March 5, at Hesston Mennonite Church on the Hesston College campus, with their program, “Mozart Exploded.” Tickets can be purchased online at hesstonbethel.org, by calling 620-327-8105 or in person at the Hesston College Bookstore. HBPA season ticket holders are invited to a come-and-go pie reception in the Hesston Mennonite Church Community Center from 6:15 to 7:15 p.m., prior to the concert. Single ticket holders may attend the pie reception at an additional cost of $5.
The Kidron Bethel Parkinson’s Support Group will meet in Menno Hall Tuesday, March 5, at 2:00 p.m. Michelle Winter, Speech Therapist at Kidron Bethel, will address the various types of services a Speech Language Pathologist provides and some specific examples of therapy sessions. All are welcome.
Kansas Mennonite Relief Sale

A few examples of how MCC spends part of the dollars raised at the KS MCC Sale:
1. $125 helps educate a young person in Burundi with an apprenticeship to learn carpentry & other trades. When they graduate they receive tools so they can start their own business and help sustain their families.
2. Learning is easier when bellies are full. MCC’s education projects often include funding ($10 per month) for nutritious meals or snacks for students in South Africa which improves concentration.
3. Latrines built through MCC are a powerful tool to prevent the spread of disease. $1500 is the full cost of a community toilet in Nepal which is maintained by locals and serves the community and travelers on a main road.

—Donations for the quilt auction are on display in the fellowship hall this Sunday and next Sunday. March 11 is the deadline for quilt donations to be turned in to be included in the buyers guide.
