The Mennonite, Inc., welcomes your original submissions for our May 2018 print magazine issue and corresponding online content focusing on Love Across Borders. Borders can be national borders that separate countries as well as economic or cultural borders that keep people apart. In the United States today, government officials are increasingly targeting and deporting undocumented immigrants, including “dreamers,” who were brought here as children by undocumented parents. Many of our Mennonite congregations include undocumented immigrants, sometimes referred to as undocumentable immigrants, given the current context.
Submissions are due to Editor@TheMennonite.org no later than March 19. We welcome written reflections—personal stories, biblical or theological reflections, poetry and more (800-1,200 words)—as well as original photography, multimedia products (including but not limited to original music recordings, music playlists and videos) and artwork on the theme. Please note we are committed to anti-oppression reviews as part of our editorial process. We have pulled together a list of anti-oppression guidelines for writers to consider as they are developing their piece. You can also review our full editorial guidelines.

Kansas Mennonite Relief Sale
Praising God Through Service
Sale Dates: April 13 – 14, 2018
REMEMBERING 50 years of the Relief Sale in Kansas
The 16th Annual Mid-Kansas MCC Relief Sale (1984) was blessed with a bright sun and a cool day that caused appetites to be good. A large crowd was present and they responded to the opportunity to bid and buy in unprecedented fashion. The Beef Auction sold 45 animals and the 3rd Dairy Auction sold 13 high quality animals. Dr. Roland Krause and helpers manned the information booth housed in the MDS Service Bus. In 1984, the New Year’s Cookie booth made 17,500 cookies; 1,100 people participated in the Fellowship Meals program. There were 22 quilts that brought more than $1,000 each with the top price being $2,400. $345,000 was sent to MCC to contribute to God’s work around the world. Chairman Galle in his annual report reminded us that we are stewards of what God has entrusted to us. He reminded us that we should “Give until it feels good.”
In 1988 a new venture was child care for kids 1-5 years of age. Teenagers and adults interacted with the kids bringing smiles to the faces of both the young and the old. The Beef Walk began at Ebenfeld Church after a time of worship and the Dairy Walk began in Kingman after devotions. The walks ended at the Fairgrounds just in time for the sale of all the animals donated to the Sale. The combined walks raised $60,000. Rain was present on Sale day, the number of quilts was down, the number of bidders was down but the result in dollars raised was very close to the previous year with 40 less quilts. Maynard Shelly who Chaired the Publicity Committee indicated that the Sale is one of the major inter-Mennonite events. MCC received $400,000 from the work and contributions of many. Praising God through Service.

REMEMBERING 50 years of the Relief Sale in Kansas
In 1976, the Sale was still using the State Fair Bison Arena on the State Fairgrounds, Hutchinson, as the main building for auctions and sales. According to the annual report it was the first time that soft ice cream was sold and it sold very well. Fifty-nine bales of wood shavings were used to cover the dirt floor and control the dust around the quilt display. Approximately 1,100 pies were sold. The annual report for 1976 recognizes the contributions of many volunteers who “Work in the name of Christ”. As we celebrate our 50th year, may we remember those who have made the Sale successful through Service to God.
1980 is the year when the sales tax exemption was put behind us. Visitors from 11 different states contributed to the attendance of 13,500. Griselda Shelly, MCC Central States Regional Director, set up a multi-media program to show Sale attenders the MCC programs that benefited from the Relief Sale. The Quilt and Comforter Committee auctioned 367 items totaling a financial benefit of $47,356.50. Verenike with ham gravy sold for 75 cents each, and borscht sold for 85 cents a bowl. This was the year that began the central location for collecting pies. Using the method of counting cars and multiplying by 4 estimated attendance at the Sale at 15,452. We are not looking for large gifts; we are looking for mass involvement. Everyone doing a little gets us there. We only have $25,000 to go with 8 weeks left. EXCELLENT work!!! Keep putting your checks in our boxes.
—The 1st KS MCC Sale was held at the newly built Marion County Fairgrounds in 1968 (FIFTY YEARS AGO). The auction attracted about 4,000 people and raised over $18,000. Due to wet weather as well as new highway construction in the area, a shuttle bus was set up to haul hundreds to and from the area. Items ranged from baked goods to antiques, to livestock and quilts. Some of the 150 quilts were reported to sell as HIGH as $1000 each. Verenike were made during the sale. HELP us CELEBRATE 50 years by making something for the sale this year.
New for the 50th Annual Kansas Mennonite Relief Sale. As we meet for our 50th anniversary Sale to raise money for the Mennonite Central Committee, the Sale Board is providing a few new events. One of those events is a program with Mini Auction on Friday night, April 13, and featuring the vocals of the Kansas Mennonite Men’s Chorus. A scavenger hunt for all ages is being organized to help you find things and learn about the workings of the sale. We are providing a time capsule for each Church and Sale Committee to have the opportunity to put a memory into the capsule. The capsule will be opened at the Sale in 25 years. Finally, our brothers and sisters with MDS will be putting on their MCC hats and building a tool shed on the Fairgrounds during the Sale weekend. Construction will start on Friday at noon and the blitz build will be completed by Saturday noon. Sale attendees of all ages will be encouraged to pick up a hammer or a paint brush to help with the construction. The tool shed will be auctioned as part of the General Auction. Please mark your calendars for April 13 and 14 for the 50th Annual MCC Sale!
